Before I Die

1) I think Tessa has an awkward relationship with her dad, it was obviously better before she got sick. Even though she knows she's sick, she doesn't like the way he treats her. She feels like a baby when she's around her dad. I think Cal does feel neglected by their father. He's younger than Tessa but he feels as if she gets all of the attention in the family. He knows about her illness but I don't think he understands it. I would say that now Tessa has an awkward relationship with her mother too. Her parents are divorced, she'd like for all of her family to be together for the simple fact that she's about to die.

2) I think the true qualities of a friend is someone that will be there for you through whatever is going on, someone who won't judge you, someone who you can go out and have fun with, someone who is interested in the same things you are. I think Tessa and Zoey's friendship is wild, but I don't know how it was before she got sick. She offers her drugs. Tessa's father calls Zoey to get her out of bed because Zoey is really the only person Tessa will listen to. Tessa sees Zoey as someone she can have a lot of time with while she's dying.

3) Tessa doesn't want to return to school because of her appearance, she doesn't want people just staring at her because the word will probably get around that she's sick and people will start to treat her differently, just like her family did. I don't know how difficult it is for teenagers to deal with classmates with terminal illnesses, I think they should all just put themselves in Tessa's shoes. Zoey might tell other students to act normal around her.

4) Tessa is sad that she's going to die and she can't do anything about it. She's dealing with this by going out and doing things you're not supposed to do but with a nonchalant attitude because she knows she's going to die anyway.
Zoey doesn't really care about anythig. She does whatever she wants. I honestly don't know why she's acting the way she is towards Tessa when she knows she's about to die. I guess that's how she's dealing with it.
Cal is too young to understand all of what's going on. He's trying to be nice towards Tessa because he knows she's going to die but no one knows when.
The father is trying to do everything he can for Tessa. You can tell that he's depressed by some of the things he does.
The mother is trying to be around more, I really don't know how she's feels about Tessa dying but I'm sure any mother who found out their child had a terminal illness would be sad.

To Katie Morrison: I'm reading this book too. I think it's a very good book.

Independent Reading Unit

The book that I would like to read is called "Before I Die." I would like to read this book because it seems like it's interesting and I like those kind of books. I'm expecting to read about this boy who is about to die and is doing all kinds of crazy things before he dies. My second choice whould be "Lockdown." If it's anything like the shows I would like it. I think those Tv shows called Lockdown are interesting. They get my attention.

If Only...

If Tom was found innocent, Mayella and her father would've went to jail because they lied. Tom would be more respected in the community because he was telling the truth. The whole United States would have heard about this case because it was so significant. Tom and his family would've gotten a lot of money and moved somewhere out of Maycomb county.

If Tom was shot in the courtroom, he would've died then and not in jail. I think that would've been better for him because being shot 17 times is a bit excessive. The person who shot him would've went to jail and in the end he would've been found innocent. They would've had his funeral and that would've been the end of it.

If Tom would've stayed in jail until Atticus filed an appeal, I think that would've worked out in his favor. He was being impacient, I mean what innocent man would want to be in jail anyway but I think he should've waited a little bit. I think if Atticus got to the chance to file an appeal it all would've worked out for him.

I think these questions are very important because they kind of clear things up so that everyone can get to the bottom of this and find out the truth.

Bravery and Courage

I think bravery is having the guts to do something that other people can't or won't do. And courage is

The ability to do something that frightens one.

Strength in the face of pain or grief. The most courage person in the book to me is Scout. She's only 6. Her mom died when she was 2 so she doesn't remember much of her. She doesn't have a mother figure in her life. She lives with her father and her brother. That's why she doesn't act like a girl. I admire my aunt because she almost died because of a bad heart and now she acts as if none of that stuff happened because she's gotten a new heart and a new start.

1930's music

Music was very different in the 1930's than it is now. They had more pop music than anything else. Jazz became popular in the 1930's too. Popular singers and/or dancers of the 1930s include the Andrews Sisters, Fred Astaire, Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Roy Rogers, Ginger Rogers, Shirley Temple, and Ethel Waters. Othello; Jealousy

I think this picture describes jealousy because the baby is jealous of his little sister because she is getting more attention than he is. This happens a lot in real life. When kids have to deal with a new baby sister or baby brother, they either like them or they're jealous of them.

This picture descirbes jealousy because the girl is jealousy of a couple that she sees. This could often be because she doesn't have a boyfriend or something could have happened in her last relationship to where she doesn't like seeing happy couples.

I guess the only thing I can relate to in the book was when Ruth was thinking about abortion. My sister was about to have a her baby aborted because she had just started college, her and her boyfriend weren't married yet. A baby would've affected her school a lot. She had to take off of over a year of school to put her dreams on hold so she could take care of things that she had to do with her daughter. She had to get a part time job since she now had to take care of herself and her daughter. I'm sorry I couldn't make this post any longer...I really can't think of anything else to say

MY American Dream

I would like to become a physicians assistant. It will take me many years after high school to achieve this goal but I do have a back up plan. After I become a physicians assistant, I will move to Miami and work at one of the hospitals there. Typical day in my life as a physician assistant would be getting up, getting my children up, getting them breakfast and taking them to school, go to work, pick my children up from daycare and head home, cook dinner and get them ready for bed and head to bed with my husband. I won't see my family much since they'll all live about 14 hours away and I'll have a busy scheduel. But I will visit when I can, or even have them come visit me whenever they can. I'll have a house, large enough for me and my family and extra room for other children that I may have or whenever family comes to visit. Achieving this dream makes me happy because I'll be able to give my children everything they want and I'll live in a place that has warm weather and I'll get to visit the beach more often. Florida is a much better place than here.

3rd quarter blog post #1

The first author says that the American Dream has to do with equality, not wealth. The second author believes that the American Dream has everything to do with money. The first author believe in sharing and making sacrufuces for others. The second author believed that the American Dream is being rich. Making money for your family. The first author brings up "city upon a hill" sermon. Which I believed, talking about making sacrifices for others. In the sermon, governor Winthrop said "We must be willing to abridge ourselves of our superfluities for the supply of others' necessities," The second author basically was saying that everyone's lives revovle around money. People always ask the simple question "what do you do for a living?" Clearly stating that the American Dream is being wealthy. I knew more about what the second author was talking about. I kind of agreed with both of them. I understand making sacrifices for others, but I also understand that if you don't have money, then you don't really have anything. My answer was similar to the second author's, but the first author made me think more about it and what I had said in my answer.

Mosaic:

I did this mosaic on Elie. I chose the cross because it represents how he was in the beginning and how much faith he had. I chose these words because I feel like they describe how he felt during the concentration camp. I used changing words aslo because he changed a lot during the Holocaust. Some of the changes were good and some were bad. Elie probably wasn't the only person in the concentration camps that felt like this. I'm sure all of them felt this way but they adapted to the changes in a different way. I tried to make it so that the words at the bottom of the cross kind of faded because Elie lost hope and faith during the Holocaust.

 

To Chardonnay: I like the shape and color that you used. The words describe what character you used. Good job.

Can the Holocaust happen in the US?

Can the Holocaust happen in the United States? I think this is a rhetorical question because something like that could never happen in the United States during this time period. We have rights in the consitution that protect us from something like a genocide taking place. Maybe before the constitution was written something like that COULD have taken place, but definitely not now. If so, The next Holocaust won't be based on religion or culture or skin color or even sex. It will be based on income or wealth.  It would be the poor people in our contry that would be killed. I'm not sure if this could really happen but if it did, this is what it would be like. Because there are already conflicts in our contry about poor verse wealthy. And the wealthy people don't really want to help the poor people because they feel like if they want monay then they can work for it...but some of them aren't even fit to work. It probably wouldn't necessarily be a holocaust because millions of poeple wouldn't be killed if this had taken place, it'd be less.

This article is about a man named Mr. Murangira. He's from Rwanda and he was a victim of the tribal dispute that turned into a genocide. He is a survivor of the shooting and chopping of people at a technical school in Rwanda.There were only three other survivors that day and Mr. Murangira, with a deep indentation in his forehead from where the bullet was removed, wants to make sure that the attack is never forgotten. He guides visitors down the hallways of the school and unlocks doors to classroms that are partially covered with the remains of those who were killed by Hutu extremists. Closer inspection of the remains, which have been treated with a traditional substance to slow decomposition, reveals exactly in what manner many of them died. In the article, it says that a woman has her arms over her face, as if protecting herself from attack. One of her forearms has been hacked off. Another, a youngster, has a thin crack across his skull, the imprint of a machete. All across Rwanda, there are similar scenes of butchery, preserved by survivors just as they were. But with the 10th anniversary of the mass killing approaching in April, the Rwandan authorities are working to bury the bones while still preserving the memories of the estimated 800,000 Tutsi, who make up a minority in the country, and moderate Hutus who died. The memorials are just one part of Rwanda's attempt to recover from the events of 1994.  Prosecuting the people who killed, an international tribunal is slowly working its way through the big fish while Rwandan courts handle the lieutenants. With too many offenders to possibly try, President Paul Kagame recently released tens of thousands of people from jail and ordered them to face community trials, known as gacacas.

Introduction to Night:

On Wednesday, when we took the Holocaust pre test, I learned that more people had died than what I had originally thought. Yesterday, when we watched the movie I learned that it was very like, unbelievable. The movie was very graphic. Some of the things I saw made me sick and to know that people were actually treated like that just makes me feel something more than sad. It's undescribable. Seeing all those things that happened really makes me want to know why. Like, there was no reason for people to be treating like they were less than animals. When I saw the starving people that you could see their ribs through their body it made me extremely uncomfortable to watch. They were so helpless. I wanna know more about to Nazis and their reasoning behind this because I can't make any sense of it, at all. Nobody can. I wanna know that after seeing all the damage they caused, if they had the chance to take it back, would they? I'd hope so. I knew a lot about the Holocaust before we started talking about it in this class but it always makes me sad, seeing the things that happened to millions of people for no reason. I don't really want to read Night. It's going to make me sad all over again. But it is nice to see how it for from a boy's point of view, since I only read the Diary of Anne Frank. It had to have been worse for a boy.

Introductory Post

The name's Jennifer. I am a very good reader, however, I don't like to read that much. I guess my favorite type of books are like dramatic ones. I really don't like to read long books unless I absolutely have to. I am not reading any books at the moment. The last book I read was Right Behind You by Gail Giles. That book was very intersting. I liked it a lot. Probably one of the best book I'll ever read. In summary, it's about a kid that gets in some trouble when he's younger and because of it, it follows him through his whole life. It's kind of sad. You have to really be able to relate to things like that to read that book.
